"Look at Saint-Victoire, what a take off! What imperious longing for sunshine! And what melancholy at night when all this weight comes down." Paul Cézanne The Saint-Victoire mountain rises high above the Aix-en Provence countryside only 10 km. east of the town. The body of limestone shines like a white pyramide from the west and the impressive south wall continues for 10 km. eastwards, lighting up the countryside from the south like a fully lit oscean liner. After more than 10 years of walking up and down and around this mountain, Sainte Victoire never stops to facinate me with its changing profiles and lighting. It takes some effort to reach its summit, but it's well worth it for the discoveries along the different routes and the views from the top. I can see why painters, Cézanne in particular, made Saint-Victoire the subject for many of his paintings. He became facinated by the mountain and its countryside and his paintings made Saint-Victoire famous world wide.
